This Fall, performing artist Emily Michaels King presents an expanded version of her celebrated show, MAGIC GIRL. MAGIC GIRL is a companion piece and prequel to Michaels King's 2024 production STAR KEEPER.
ABOUT MAGIC GIRL
It’s easy to forget, TOO easy for the world to make you think that the GRAY you feel is all there is. That the part of you that was there from the beginning, the shimmering core that is Always, never even existed. The world’s forgetting power is surprisingly strong. But why would it work so hard, if the shimmer inside you weren’t something much more powerful still?
MAGIC GIRL is an iridescent solo show by Emily Michaels King that refracts memory through the prism of personal history to explore inner light, loss of self, and the quest for wholeness. This equally vibrant and bold, vulnerable and deep journey travels from the shimmering world of childhood magic to the dark, sparkle-less realms of maturation where forgetting spreads and glow fades. Weaving movement, lightbeams, memoir, and nostalgia, MAGIC GIRL harnesses the power of childhood sparkle, unabashed self love, and the irrepressible fight to
reclaim your essential power,
become who you were always meant to be,
remember how TECHNICOLOR you’ve been, all along.
So grab your flashlight and a palm full of glitter because we’re on a quest to FIND RAINBOW.
ABOUT EMILY MICHAELS KING
Emily Michaels King is a performing artist based in St. Paul, Minnesota exploring authentic expression and human depth through movement, multimedia, and visual compositions for the stage.
Emily is known for her fearless personal work, provocative compositions, and collaged evening-length solo performances, including: her award winning show MAGIC GIRL; multimedia online work DIGITAL; IN PERSON, a companion to DIGITAL; the raucous CHICKEN WING; and STAR KEEPER. An in-progress version of her solo, ELECTRIC, was performed at Arena Dance’s 2022 CandyBox Festival. Additionally, her work has been presented at the Walker Art Center, the Guthrie Theater, and Movement Research, among others. Emily is also a 2025 McKnight Choreography Fellow.
Pairing minimalism and subtlety with cacophony and bared irreverence, Emily’s works employ the lush landscape of the inner world and the power of unapologetic vulnerability. They combine movement with text, graphics, sound, and technology to focus on themes of self discovery and reclamation, womanhood, and bold expressions of personal truth. www.emilymichaelsking.com
